“Life is a story we tell ourselves” – author Gene Wolf, The Fifth Head of Cerberus
But what if…
What if, in the story I tell myself, I had not been raised to see myself as the hero of the story???
What would that story be like? If I wasn’t the hero of the story, how would I see myself? Which character would I be?
How would I feel day-to-day, within the story if I wasn’t the hero?
Do a little thinking right now – do I believe I can be the hero of my life story? If not, who have I been?
The second part of that sentence, “and we must make it one worth remembering,” gets left off in the re-quoting sometimes.
No matter how much mileage you have already, it’s not too late to be sure you are the hero of your story and you have lived a life worth remembering. Most importantly, remembering by YOU. You can never control what others do, but you can control what you do. If you create a life with an interesting story, you will be happy and proud to remember it.
You can start right now. Resolve to be kinder and friendlier everywhere you can. That will make a story that you want to remember because you will remember how you felt and it will feel good.
There’s probably also a goal you’ve been deferring or put on hold for a while now. What little step can you take today to start on your Hero’s Journey? Little steps add up, you know!
Even if you never finish your Journey, recounting your life story will still feel better than if you’d never started. Cast yourself as the star of the story and make it a Hero’s Journey.
