One of the effects of the Tests and Trials stage of a Hero’s Journey is transformation. You change. You are transformed as a result of the Tests and Trials; and that transformation is what enables a successful Hero’s Journey, not just getting through the stages.
That’s the paradox of the Hero’s Journey. The person you are today sets out toward a goal. You get past the Guardians at the Gate, you troop on and deal with every Test and Trial the Journey throws at you. But you are now a different person than the one who set out. That difference will usually be visible to those who know you – they may even see it before you do.
You will definitely be wiser, stronger, more resilient as you are transformed by your Tests and Trials. For sure you have questioned your goal many, many times. As a result of your transformation, your goal may shift or change direction completely. The emotional, psychological, and spiritual changes can make you feel mood levels from disconcerting to shock and disbelief.
But the point is transformation. Best to know that going in, remind yourself, and try not to be too scared of what you’re going to become.
BTW, PBS is re-airing the conversations between Joseph Campbell and Bill Moyers: The Power of Myth. Be sure and watch it when you get a chance.
